Anne Veck in Bicester Named as One of UK’s Best Salon Designs

Anne Veck Salon in Bicester is in the running to win ‘Salon Design’ of the year in the National Hairdressers Federation / National Beauty Federation 2019 Business Awards.

The salon, situated in Crown Walk and part of the Pioneer Square shopping development, gained the shortlisting thanks to its use of recycled and reconstituted materials and furniture to reduce its carbon footprint. Owners Anne Veck and Keith Mellen founded the Bicester salon in 2001, relocated in 2016, and completed the updated salon design in 2018. The couple is unwavering in their commitment to create an environmentally conscious business, and this core value has been reflected into the aesthetics of their salon.  “Our clients absolutely love it,” Anne says. “They like the eco-friendly theme and that it’s so unique, especially the DIY aspect.”

Anne designed the salon and built it herself along with help from two brothers Eric and Sylvain who came over from France, husband Keith and nephew Phil – it really was a family affair!

The inspiration for the project came after a trip to Namibia, where Anne and Keith stumbled across a stunning salon, Ilana’s Hair Gallery, in Swakopmund. Its interior design was full of recycled, reconstituted materials, furniture and iron work, rescued from demolition sites or bought at auction or second-hand shops.

This sparked ideas for their own creativity and possibilities, and they decided on up-cycling furniture into the salon’s new look rather than buying everything new. Anne incorporated recycled pallets for the reception area table, the statement welcome desk, selfie-wall and storage throughout the salon, and also sourced and reconstituted a large cable drum as a focal point in the salon. “It’s a great communal hub,” Anne explains. “We stripped and varnished the natural wood, adding plug sockets so clients can charge their phones, and now it’s in the centre of the salon where people can sit whilst their colour develops. We’re so pleased with how we’ve given lots of old items new life. We aimed for a warehouse effect with a feeling of space and light, and the result is current and modern. Being environmentally friendly is so important to us. We truly believe the hairdressing industry could lead the way in sustainability for business in the UK, so we're proud to play our part in helping the environment and working towards making a positive difference.”

Also contributing to the business’s sustainability are infrared heaters made from recycled materials which consume 60% less energy than standard convection heaters and produce no Carbon Dioxide. In addition, the salon uses compostable towels which reduce hot water use and avoid landfill, has energy efficient LED lighting throughout and uses recycled card and paper for all stationery and literature, while the telephone calls and broadband are 100% carbon neutral. Keith Mellen, Director at Anne Veck, added: “Bicester is one of the UK’s most pioneering eco-friendly towns and we are very proud to know that our eco-friendly salon will be able to contribute in its own way to help make a positive difference to the environment. We’re delighted to be nationally recognised for what is such a passion for us.”

This Salon Design award nomination comes hot on the heels of a string of industry recognitions for the Anne Veck Group, the most recent of which is ‘Innovation of the Year’ at HJ’s British Hairdressing Business Awards. The eco-friendly company has had an outstanding period of recognition. Its Oxford-based salon was crowned Green Salon of the Year 2019 at the Salon Business Awards – the second time winning this accolade. Further titles of Hair Magazine’s Best Green Salon Award, and NHF’s Best Environmentally Friendly Business Award also came in 2017.

The winner of each category in the NHF/NBF’s Business Awards will be announced at a glitzy awards evening at the St Pancras Renaissance Hotel, London, on 17 November 2019.
